Spam Technics

September 30, 2005

Tonight, i started wondering how spammers harvest email addresses to be used in advertising.

I’ve seen instances where spammers will grab a list of recently registered domain names, and then add common email accounts like webmaster@domain.com, sales@domain.com, support@domain.com, etc. to each domain in the list. Then, add the domains to their database, and start spamming.

Then i started wondering about the more advanced technics they could use. For instance, performing a dns query to grab the SOA record of a domain, and then taking an email out of that record.

I’ve also seen a company called aplus.net use recently registered domain lists, and public whois records, to call people on the phone to advertise their marketing, hosting, and design services.

All this got me wondering. So, i registered a domain, put my cell phone number in the whois records, put an alternate email address into the whois records. From there, i setup a dns record on my work server with another fake email address in the SOA records.

The domain has a .com extention. I’m not gonna name the complete domain because it would ruin the project. I’ll share the results at the end of the week, or at the end of the month. Everything is up, now i just have to wait for a connection 🙂
