.vimrc settings

March 9, 2005

If you are a shell monkey like me, you like editing files on the server side using vi. Chances are you have noticed vi is almost unusable out of the box.

Well, a while back i discovered this set of .vimrc options that make vi alot more flexible.

Fire up ssh, or open a terminal
type the following:

vi ~/.vimrc

Hit the I key

paste the following:

set cpo=aABceFs
set backspace=2

hit the escape key

type

:wq

Mow open up a document in vi, or create a new document in vi, and it will be alot easier to use.

Enjoy.
